St. Francis School in Yona last March installed solar panels, which produce enough electricity to meet half the school's power needs.
According to Principal Bill Paulino, the school's roughly $8,000 monthly power bill was trimmed by $1,500 with the introduction of solar energy.
Public schools around the island could be using solar panels or other types of green energy within a couple of years after the Department of Education procures services for renewable energy sources.
The government's General Services Agency is preparing a request for information to feel out the market before procuring power services from renewable energy companies, said Claudia Acfalle, chief procurement officer for GSA.
According to the request for information, GSA would look for a company to enter into a power purchasing agreement to cover no more than 80 percent of the school system's power needs.
