Chalan Pago church blessed by benefits of solar power

Father Edivaldo Da Silva has been living in Guam for roughly a decade, after moving here from Brazil. He has been the pastor for the Our Lady of Peace Church in Chalan Pago for two years, and says earlier this year the church received a blessing. "One day the father of Scott, Bill, he came and made me this proposal about the interest to invest in our island community, and I did not take the decision alone, I consult my pastoral counsel and we thought it was a great idea to install here," the priest recalled. Bill Hagen, the owner of Pacific Solar and Photovoltaic, Guam's first locally-owned solar company, entered into a power purchase agreement, providing the Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church solar power. But how much did it cost? "For our church it was $0, no cost whatsoever!" said Fr. Edivaldo. "The money comes from a third-party and they install everything for us and then we pay for them, and we use the service of Pacific Solar, that was a great service done by Scott and company." Fr. Edivaldo said the decision to utilize solar energy was twofold, saying, "One of the reasons is that as a Catholic, we follow the advice of our pope, and the three last popes they are really encouraging society to use renewable energy, and the solar system is a great way to protect the environment." "The second reason is of course the cost, the power here in Guam is quite high, and with the solar panel we shall save more or less 20%, we shall pay 20% less than we used to pay, and during the year we save between $5,000 to $6,000. So I think it's a win situation, everybody wins," he said. With the solar panels currently in place, Father Edivaldo says the church generates enough solar energy to provide electricity both during the day and at night. When asked if he'd recommend solar energy to other people in the community, he enthusiastically said, "Definitely, definitely, go green, it's a win-win situation!" He added, "I was thinking the other day, solar power systems is really literally a gift from above, because it comes from the sun. So I would definitely recommend to anybody that is interested in it."
